Paul A. Buongiorno, MD, FAPA, is Board Certified as a Diplomate by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.  Dr. Buongiorno previously served as Chief Resident at GeorgetownUniversityHospital, Founder and Medical Director of Fair Oaks Hospital Pain Unit, Founder and Medical Director of a GeriatricDayHospital for Inova Health Systems, Founder and Medical Director of an Outpatient Geriatric Consultative Service in the Northern Virginia area and Medical Director of a large multidisciplinary group psychiatric practice.  Dr. Buongiorno formerly was a Consulting Associate in Psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine and a former Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Buongiorno has more than 30 years of clinical experience in the management of psychiatric disorders.  He is recognized as an expert in psychopharmacology and psychodynamic psychotherapy and has taught psychiatric residents for many years.  He is recognized nationally and lectures widely on a variety of topics including the pharmacologic treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, chronic pain, obsessive compulsive disorders, treatment resistant mood disorders and pharmacoeconomics.  In addition, he has authored many clinical articles on a variety of psychiatric topics.

With broad clinical, research, administrative and teaching experience, Dr. Buongiorno is presently engaged in full time private practice and teaching psychology students and family practice residents.  He has spent his entire career designing innovative psychiatric health care delivery systems in an inpatient, outpatient and community setting.

Currently, Dr. Buongiorno’s research interests include the effect of untreated mood disorders and the subsequent neurocognitive deficits.  This research includes the effects of medications and/or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on their deficits.

Sheila Mulford, Executive Assistant, TMS Coordinator began working with Dr. Buongiorno in 1989 and assisted in running a large multidisciplinary psychiatric group practice in Northern Virginia.  Prior to moving to Northern Virginia, she lived in Scotland where she completed a Diploma in Medical Secretarial and Administration at Dundee College. After graduating, she began working in administrative and medical technical positions, firstly in the Department of Bacteriology at The City Hospital in Edinburgh and then as a Medical Assistant in a large primary care practice in Edinburgh Scotland. In 1988 she moved to Fairfax, Virginia and held the position of Executive Assistant to the Director of Nursing Education and Research at Inova Hospital before starting to work with Dr. Buongiorno.  In 1995 she moved from Northern Virginia to Wilmington to manage Dr. Buongiorno’s outpatient practice. She plays an important role in the day to day running of his busy clinical practice from managing the administrative and billing office to assisting Dr. Buongiorno with patient care.  She is fully trained in performing TMS therapy and performs both technical and clinical aspects of therapy.
